October 23rd 2004
First thing I encounter this morning is the chow line. No thanks, I have already had my Egg McMuffin and OJ. They were serving bacon and eggs.
I went over to the Southwest Ambulance guys to intro myself. According to SuperSizeMe I should drop dead anytime soon.
Tent city. Yes I passed on an opportunity to sleep with 2000 women. However if they heard me snore, which they would, they would be pushing me out into traffic.
A cheering station. lots of nice folks, and some kids handing out cards.
On the top of the first mountain, I had a cheeseburger. Notice my Sweet Life Chippy little fellow on my bag. He made the trip since the Sweet life donated cookies to the cause.
And I had some Ronald McDonalds Land cookies from my trip to Kalifornia when I went to see Arnold. I still crack up over that trip, offering him a Happy Meal with Apple Dippers and the GI Joe toy!
Some way cool folks that cruise the road looking for injured walkers. All the crew were fantastic. They deserve a big thumbs up!
Mr. quick was on the side of the road offering walkers Krispy Kremes! Oh that hurts. I was ready for the Krispy Kremes. His wife was in the walk and he should be proud. I am proud of him. Great supporter! And Krispy Kremes, we have to talk my man.
The look doesn't do this picture justice. Let me explain, it is not the food. I just walked up Tatum to the top of the Camelback range headed toward Lincoln Drive. It was a darn mountain. No one said anything about mountains! I trained for straight level walking. Climb the mountain is the next training program in a few months. That is a Phoenix cancer walk up South Mountain. I ran up that once and down the side off the path. Went right to the doctor to have my head examined. What is it with me and racing. Ever see a fat guy run?
this was the view at the top. I took several moments to reflect. Ok, breath.
Passed the Barry Goldwater Memorial.
Here is a pit stop where we were to be held until the authority was given. I am not saying a word. Can you spot the fat guy?
There I am. The women here are very fast and I decided to let them go ahead. I was a gentleman. I had a chance to reflect last night, and I realized that I was here to support them and represent Sally. Not win a race. Why take something away from them. Some are survivors, some are there because of lost family members. I was not there because of MyMcDiet. I was there for them. That is what I did. I still came in 12th. out of over 2000. Not bad for a big fat, McDonalds eating guy.
Approaching
the finish with a walker who was doing great. And yes that is a Large
Vanilla Milkshake in my hand. Yum!
I made it to the finish. I met great people along the way that inspired me, like Clair, who was a survivor and a great walker. I hope to see her again some day in another race.
